Hanaya

Hanaya

2 Players, Ages 8+

Hanaya 花屋 ▶ florist is a trading-style hanafuda game for two players. The goal is to trade cards with a shared field and capture matching cards to earn more points than your opponent.

Hanaya is a new, non-traditional hanafuda game inspired by Jaipur, and very different from most other hanafuda games. It’s great for people looking for variety in gameplay.

Cards

Hanafuda § Cards

This game uses a 48-card hanafuda deck.

If you’re using a Junior Hanafuda deck, be sure to set aside its extra cards.

Setup

Shuffle the deck and deal five cards to your opponent, five cards to yourself, and five cards (face-up) to the field. Place the remaining deck adjacent to the field.

Choose a player to begin.

Gameplay

Goal

The goal of Hanaya is to add, swap, and capture cards to form yaku and score the most points possible.

Your Turn

When your turn begins, there are three options to consider, but you may only perform one of these actions per turn.

  • Add: Take one card from the field, then replenish the field from the draw pile. The field will always contain 5 cards.
  • Swap: Take any amount of cards from the field, then replace them with that same amount of cards from your hand.
  • Capture: Place two or four same-month cards from your hand in front of you. You may only capture one variety of flowers per turn.

You may hold a maximum of 7 cards in your hand.

If you are holding 7 cards, you must Swap or Capture.

After performing one of these actions, your turn is over. Now it’s the next player’s turn.

Continue until the draw pile cannot replenish the field to 5 cards.

Ending

When the field can no longer be replenished to 5 cards, the round immediately ends, and players may not capture any more combinations from their hands.

Scoring

At the end of the round, each player tallies the points of their captured cards according to the following table.

Hikari Tane Tanzaku Kasu
20 10 5 1

Bonus

Then, each player adds 5 bonus points for any full month they’ve captured.

Yaku

Then, each player adds any points from yaku they’ve formed during this round to their total. The result is their score for this round.

Series

Games are best played in a series of 3, 6, or 12 rounds. The player with the highest total score at the end of the series wins!

If the players have identical scores, rejoice in the shared victory!

Strategy

Hanaya is a very different kind of hanafuda game. You will balance the desire to hoard the most valuable cards in your hand with the practicality of capturing quicker matches. Only captured cards are scored. Holding too many cards that don’t match could prevent you from scoring points.

Also, consider points you can earn by forming yaku or by capturing all four cards from a single month. Trade carefully to maximize your points.
